NEW ORLEANS – A crewman has filed a negligence lawsuit against Gulf Logistics Operating claiming he was injured when a door reportedly slammed onto his hand over rough seas.

Plaintiff Darius Lewis filed the lawsuit in federal court against Gulf Logistics Operating citing allegations of negligence.

According to the lawsuit, Lewis was employed as a crewmember to serve aboard the defendant's vessels. On September 22, 2021, Lewis says he was performing duties in the engine room aboard the M/V MS. WENDY, a vessel owned and operated by Gulf Logistics Operating, and was instructed to open the engine room "spin door" during rough seas, causing the door to slam open, severely injuring his hand.

Lewis claims his injury was a result of the defendant's negligent failure to provide a safe working environment and cites the defendant's failure to enforce safety measures and to provide competent supervision and suitable safety equipment.

Lewis is seeking compensatory damages for pain and suffering, embarrassment, loss of earnings and earning capacity, medical expenses,  loss of normal life, mental anguish, maintenance and other damages as well as interest, attorney fees, court costs and other relief. He is being represented by George P. Vourvoulias of Harmon, Smith & Vourvoulias in New Orleans.
